Social-Emotional Learning Strategies

Infancy

During infancy, to encourage social emotional development, there needs to be a healthy bond established. A parent or educator can do this by spending a lot of time with the infant. They can practice emotions back and forth with the child through facial gestures and interactions. Another way to build on the social-emotional development would be through singing and reading to the child and physical interactions.

Toddlerhood

In Toddlerhood, there are many strategies to enhance a classroom's social emotional environment. A very important one is to model appropriate emotions and provide opportunities for creative or imaginative play. Children at this age need to experience different surroundings and how to act correctly upon them.

Another way is to encourage social emotional development is through picture stories or social stories. These demonstrate various examples of emotions a child will experience through adolescence.

Early Childhood

Early Childhood is very important in social-emotional development. Some strategies in a classroom to encourage social and emotional development include enhanced group play or activities.  An educator can do this by providing activities with group lessons to encourage conversations. Another strategy is to develop a trusting environment that is positive and inclusive (Ho, J., & Funk, S. 2018, March).

Educators can use this strategy by always having calm voice and a classroom with a routine built in. A child develops more socially and emotionally in an environment they are comfortable in.
